Hamsters, guinea pigs, mice, rats and gerbils come under the category of small pets and are found to be very intelligent, curious and easy to take care of, provided, the children are taught to take care in the proper manner. They can also be good companions for many years.
Small pets are lively and fun to watch and since they are quick movers, they may get lost in a moment. Small pets need a cage and a proper habitat for confinement and the room should be free of dampness. Since small pets do not tolerate high temperatures, their cage should not be exposed to direct sunlight.
Small pets must be provided the right material for nesting and burrowing. The water for the pets may be contaminated through flinging the bedding and so, fresh water must be provided every day. Though small pets eat the same type of food, they do have different nutritional needs. The help of a veterinarian must be sought to ensure that the small pet gets the required vitamins and minerals.
The left over vegetables of small pets must be removed which could spoil and emanate a foul smell. Small pets take time to adjust to the surroundings well and the child must be educated to handle the small pets in the proper way. Small pets can be bathed in a mild shampoo but must be dried, as quickly as possible. They should also be checked for fleas, mites and ticks on a regular basis.
