There are many species of lizards than all amphibians or mammals and their size is varying, diverse ranging, from three inch burrowers to the mighty komodo dragon of two hundred pounds. Their body color is also diverse; some even compete with butterflies in their camouflage. Their habitat is also of different nature.
So, once a person has decided to adopt a lizard as a pet, there are many things he has to know and learn. Primarily, lizards are complex animals and it is rather difficult to own and care a lizard. A small pet lizard needs a tank with enough space to move about and as far as diet for lizard is concerned, it depends on the species.
Some lizards feed exclusively on insects, some are vegetarians and some eat small mammals, birds, fish and insects and so on. Lizards need to eat every day and some times, more than once a day but it is better to avoid rotting or dirty food since it could contaminate and cause sickness to the lizard.
Lizards hate being held by the tail as it would be uncomfortable for them and the right way is to support its weight from below. All diurnal lizards need ultraviolet light and a heat light to put them in optimum temperature of at least 78 degrees F. Fresh clean water must be provided to the small pet lizard and it is good precaution not to crowd the terrarium with more than two lizards.
