Small Pets – The Most Favored Ones

There are a number of small pets such as hamsters, guinea pigs, mice, rats and so on and invariably, almost all small pets are curious, intelligent and easy to handle and provide many years of close companionship for a child. Similarly, small pets are lively and fun to watch but great care should be taken while handling them because they tend to move quickly and get lost very soon.

Taking care of small pets involves a lot of attention and care and there are many books and pamphlets for guidance. Basically, when a small pet is brought to a house, it needs a cage and a proper habitat for confinement and room to play. The cage must not be exposed to direct sunlight because small pets cannot tolerate direct sunlight.

Usually, small pets eat the same type of food but the nutritional needs many differ. Hence, to give the most ideal and proper food, it is better to check with the veterinarian to ensure that small pets get the needed vitamins and minerals.

Small pets should be given enough time to adjust to the new surroundings before they are handled and the children in the house should be educated on proper ways to handle the small pet and understand the importance of taking care of the small pet.

Small pet must be provided fresh water, every day. Their cage must be cleaned regularly and uneaten vegetables must be removed lest they spoil the cage. Small pets live in groups while others like to be left alone. Only a professional can tell you how a small pet should be housed.

Some small pets like guinea pigs, can be bathed with a baby shampoo but they should be dried as quickly as possible and soft brushes can be used. Most importantly, small pets should be checked regularly on fleas, mites and ticks.
